I was a slave to food and dieting.
I was following all the “dieting rules” I was learning in school to be a Registered Dietitian (low-fat, low-calorie, exercise more, you know the drill). I was eating low-fat meals and working out like a maniac. I tried countless “sugar detoxes.” But I kept caving. I kept putting on weight. Was I a saint? Of course not. But I was “good” 90 percent of the time.
I had the motivation. I had the knowledge. I had the grit. So WHY did I continue to stay trapped? What was wrong with me?
I struggled for years, trying to gain control. The only thing I gained was weight, and I lost more and more of my self-will and self-confidence with each out of control spiral.
Most of the time, I was starving! I restricted my calories so much that at one point I was down to 1700 a day. And despite my best efforts, I was 5, then 10, 15, and eventually 20 pounds overweight.. I was weak, exhausted, bloated, and heavier than I’ve ever been. I felt horrible about myself.
What’s more, I was obsessed with food: thoughts of it, anxiety over it, dreaming about it. It was taking over my life. So much for losing weight – I was losing my MIND!
That’s when I knew something was flawed. I assumed it was me.
And I’d wind up in the same place in a matter of days. Every time I would be a little more angry at myself for being too weak to control it, breaking my own promises and not being able to stick to my decisions. Maybe I was just flawed?
Years later I realized that I was the problem. Here’s the kicker — those dieting “rules” I was learning in dietitian school only added fuel to the fire. Following the rules failed me and brought me to the unhealthiest point of my life… and my heaviest weight.
But what happened next is what pushed me over the edge.
I remember when I got the call from my mother one morning after class: My dad was running a road race in our town when he started to feel tightness in his chest that stopped him cold. Instead of sailing across the finish line per usual, he walked across, holding his chest.
He went to the doctor—and was rushed into major heart surgery.
I was floored.
My father, who was only 47 at the time, was the picture of health: He’d followed all the same “rules” I’d been learning and following: Low fat, “heart-healthy” oatmeal for breakfast with skim milk diligently every morning, trimming any extra fat off his meat, he didn’t even look at bacon. The only difference was he never had a lick of dessert (I didn’t have enough “willpower” to resist). He even ran 3 miles a day!
I was sitting with my father in his hospital room after the surgery when the dietitian came in. I, of course, was training to be an RD myself, but I didn’t mention this. I wanted to hear what this expert had to say, because clearly the things my father had been doing (the same things I was learning) hadn’t helped at all.
Maybe she would tell us something different.
“Try to maintain a low-fat, low-calorie diet,” she said. “Never look at a stick of butter again. Eat margarine. Eat oatmeal.”
I told her, “He was already doing all of that.”
And all she could say was, “Okay, well, keep doing it.”
I was furious. I was sitting there, thinking, “You’re telling him to continue to do the very things that landed him on your operating table in the first place!”
And there I was, also doing all the “right things,” and heavier than I’d ever been. What was happening?!
That’s when I became determined to figure it out on my own. I had to become my own advocate so I could be my dad’s advocate, too.
So I dove into scientific research and studies that were outside of my assigned coursework.
What I learned was that the rules were wrong!
If I wanted different results, I needed to do the exact opposite of what I was learning in school.
I quit the low-fat, low-cal dieting. I started eating MORE calories, and MORE fat. I began to add in key supplements to support my brain chemistry so that I wouldn’t crave the sugar. I backed off the exercise, and exercised LESS. I quite literally did the opposite of everything!
And as a result, everything changed.
Most notably, thoughts and anxiety about food went away—and so did the pounds. They seemed to just vanish. And within just a few months, I was 20 pounds lighter, and have never looked back.
Not only was this shocking to me because of how this changed me physically, but also because of how it changed my ideas about myself. I had for so long believed that a sugar addiction and weight problem was just part of my identity, my genetics, my destiny…me. And that was a lie.
It’s no wonder our country is getting fatter and sicker. We’re not only following the wrong rules; we believe the wrong things.
In fact, I started breaking with LOTS of rules after I lost weight: I became more adventurous and became more in touch with who I was and could be.
I bet you’d be surprised at what you could and would do if you felt more confident, more like the best version of you…the YOU who is buried underneath those extra pounds.

The way we teach you to eat is naturally gluten-free, soy-free and dairy-free, and is overall very favorable to those with special dietary needs. We make it easy to customize and offer recommendations that are in line with many needs and preferences.
While we do encourage animal proteins because of their metabolism-boosting effects, we’ve worked with many vegetarians and vegans alike, who see great success by replacing those with their favorite protein replacements.
The BEST foods. As in, butter, bacon and dark chocolate. 🙂 Our recommended way of eating often feels like indulging, but really, it’s about including real foods, including healthy fats to support your metabolism, brain and waistline. You won’t starve, feel deprived or be cranky, and you don’t have to be the weird one, the buzzkill, “that” person at the restaurant, the one on the special “diet.” You don’t even have to drink green smoothies or do yoga. You still get to be YOU, AND see results!
Some foods might seem “special” if they’re not already part of your regular grocery haul (like avocados or bacon), but we won’t ask you to buy any pre-packaged or weird foods.
Nope. No calorie counting. No restricting. We are not going to make a list of forbidden foods that you love and condemn you to a life of deprivation!
What we are going to do is focus on foods that make you feel great (and not ones that make you feel lousy). We’re talking butter and other healthy fats, meat, and a range of delicious stuff that will keep you fueled, satisfied, and wanting for nothing. And the extra amazing thing is that you don’t need to be anywhere near “perfect.” If you happen to go off the plan, it’s easy to hop right back on, and with minimal negative consequences.
Nope! You won’t be hungry. (And if you are, then you’ll get to eat!) You really will feel nourished and satisfied — not deprived! This can be a difficult concept to grasp since most weight loss and nutrition programs are based on restriction. Bye Bye Belly Fat isn’t like that. In fact, quite the opposite. We’ve found that it’s critical that you are fueling your body with enough food and calories so that it can feed your metabolism and shed pounds.
